Dallas Notes: Staley Lecture Series (Wheaton, October 31 -- November 2, 2001)

The Disappearance of Moral Knowledge
not that it doesn’t exist but that’s it’s not accessible
the disappearance of Jesus the Teacher and the emergence of Xianity w/o d’ship
Col 3.1-17
we have a principle at work in us that will change us and we have a part depending on where we direct our minds
when you have a choice b/t right and wrong, what’s your average?
in this talk, I’m not concerned about what we do so much as what we’re intending
what is your plan for putting off the old person and putting on the new?
trying doesn’t work
you need a strategy
another way of saying ‘what is your plan?’ is ‘what does d’ship mean to you?’
we conservatives have lost Jesus as Teacher
trying will just disappoint and embitter us and we will return to our old patterns
we’re too focused on what happens after you die
salvation is much more that that. eternal life is just one of the effects.
salvation is being caught up in the life of JX
in fundamentalist/modernist struggle, conservatives understood Jesus as Teacher for code that He was just a man
reach an understanding in your own mind what it is to become a disciple of J and become His disciple
learn from Jesus how He would live my life
learn inner transformations of heart and of thought
we believe Jesus will guide us, but we have to enter it as a living practice
teaching form framework but don’t give the details
with d’ship the things that Jesus said and did are increasingly the sweetest, strongest, most natural and easiest things for us to do

Staley Lecture Series, November 1, 2001

What think ye of X? Is He competent?
He is the smartest man who ever lived
Mt 5.20: the secret of moral transformation
must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees
beyond action to being/character/heart
it’s not would you do, but what you would do
a thief is not someone who steals but someone who would
it’s not enough to not kill. we need to get rid of the cause: anger.
anger is the will to harm others. and contempt goes beyond that.
sequence matters in the SotM: if you’re still full of anger, you won’t be able to turn the other cheek

I want to grow up to be a dear old saint like Dallas who can connect with young people]

Gospels of Sin Management and Gospels of Life
common assumption: 2 gospels in NT: Jesus’ and Paul’s
Jesus: Kingdom of God, maybe the Millennium and it was at hand but went away when Jesus was rejected
Paul: how to get your sins forgiven
Gospels of Sin Management: the only essential issue is forgiveness of sins
does the Gospel I believe and preach have a natural tendency to produce disciples of Jesus in the K or only consumer of religious goods and services (including the death of X on the cross)
the essence of ‘repent’ is to realize I’ve been on the wrong path (think about your thinking)
what is commonly preached as the Gospel is one theory of the atonement
our confidence is not in the death of Jesus; it’s in Jesus
You are an unceasing spiritual being with an eternal destiny in God’s great universe
God creates creators and His plan is for them to rule with Him forever and ever
