Author Sketches: Interview with Dallas Willard: Knowing Christ Today

the Trinity is a difficult doctrine to comprehend, but if you start living in terms of it, you can experience it first-hand and learn about it and even test it
the normal way God answers 'by fire' is moving with you when you obey Him
Seek first the KoG and its righteousness, and everything will be added
If you dwell in my word, then you're my disciples and you will know the truth and the truth will make you free.
The dwelling is obeying, putting into practice
Then there is freedom b/c we are not responsible for the results
[so that goes for me with my calling to make disciples at CVLC]
be where you are, say and do what is appropriate in reliance on X and watch the result
young people no longer trust their teachers and their elders. they don't think they know what they're talking about.
[everyone believes they have to figure out their own truth. that's just your truth.
and I would sure be reluctant to give any teachers or professors a pass. how do we accept the knowledge they do offer and filter out the rest?]
students are just pursuing credits, esp. in humanities
Western civ. has been different in history based on belief in possibility of knowledge
the opportunities are mind-blowing, b/c the world can't answer the basic questions of life
authority must be open to question and tested by reality
[young people are sick of authority that is not open to question and not testable and just protecting a vested interest]
influences:
Wesley, Law, a Kempis, Finney
wearing out Bibles, gets more intelligible and deeper every year
if the test of being a Xian is loving one another, we flunk
how do we guard against intellectualism or pride in superior knowledge?
humility: you don't rely on your intellect
Pr 3: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding
many people think the primary function of correct theology is to please God
but we please God by loving one another and living in love and having a genuine spiritual life
What does it matter if you have a correct definition of the Trinity if by your arrogance you displease the Trinity -- a Kempis
knowledge puffs up, love builds up
knowledge is important and you can't base your faith on ignorance
