Dallas Notes: Interview: Willard on Hearing God (2005?)

Interview: Willard on Hearing God (No date given. 2005 guessed from Christian Audio release date and knowing Renovation interview was 2005)

God has spoken. knowing what He wants us to do is a matter of public record.
God does not speak to some people b/c they're not prepared to do what He would say if He did
recognition of God's voice is not automatic. He does not sound like what we expect Him to sound like
God won't blow us away
He doesn't want to make robots out of us
We should watch for God's hand to move in our circumstance, to guide our thinking into Scripture, Xian lives as they have been lived through history.
silence can be a method of communication
most common way: characteristic type of thought. we must learn to identify through experience, as we do anyone's voice.
The sheep know the Shepherd's voice
Still small voice
God rarely shouts. He's not willing to compete for our attention. We should seek Him, look and listen for Him
When we do that and are surrendered to His will and He judges that we need to hear, He will speak to us by causing a characteristic thought in our minds
If you aren't going to obey it can harden yourself against it and God will stop speaking to you.
God leaving us alone is the worst thing that can happen to a human being
For the person who wishes to know and wants to put that into the context of a living relationship with Jesus and God, that person can learn to know the kinds of thoughts that come into their mind from God
Peter heard God's voice (You are the Messiah), but then spoke with Satan's voice (You can't die)
Learning to recognize God's voice is more important than getting guidance on any single issue.
Ask God to guide you for His glory, don't just use God as a resource
Show me the way
Teach me how to know Your voice.
Observe. Look. Be quiet.
Never hesitate to ask for more clarity, like Gideon.
If any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who loves to give and doesn't scold. -- James
God, teach me. listen and observe
important theological point: God does not overwhelm us. approaches us in low key ways.
sometimes leads people to think that God is a trickster, mumbles, wants to catch us messing up
He gives to all men liberally and does not scold them. -- James
Three lights: circumstances, Scripture and the Holy Spirit
The most important thing you can do for your children is to fill their minds with Bible stories.
Encourage them to step out and experiment.
If they have a choice to make. Ask them to pray God will show His hand and teach them to watch and listen.
We must not be frightened that He won't. This is a question of if we really believe what we say
Step into it and let's see what happens. I'll be praying with you and I'll be with you. They will see things happen and then you can help them to understand
God is working in the world, in normal life, and He's working to bring something wonderful to pass and they are a part of it.
We fill kids' minds with the wrong things that won't help them live life
When God is silent, we ask directly: is there something that is keeping You from speaking to me? Have I set my heart in some way? Am I doing something that prevents that?
Then rely on God to make it clear.
You need to be willing to change.
If you've made a good effort, assume it's God's will for you to decide on your own.
He will be as close to you as you go forward on that basis as if He told you explicitly what to do, sometimes even more so.
The main way God shows His presence with us is not by talking to us or giving us feelings, but by acting with us.
